Feather Flag Buying Guide: Teardrop vs Blade vs Knife vs Rectangle
Share
Custom advertising flags are one of the cheapest ways to get noticed, whether you are pulling traffic into a storefront or marking your spot at an event. But the shapes are not interchangeable. Each one moves, reads, and holds up differently. Here is how to pick the right flag, size, and base.
The four shapes
- Teardrop flag: a rounded, curved shape held taut by the pole, so it stays readable even with little wind. The most popular all rounder for storefronts, events, and dealerships.
- Blade flag: a tall rectangular shape that maximizes vertical print space. Great when you have more copy or a tall logo and want the largest readable area.
- Knife flag: similar to a blade but tapered at the top, so it flutters more freely in wind. A strong pick for outdoor and windy locations where movement catches the eye.
- Rectangle flag: a classic flat rectangle, the most affordable option and the most flexible for traditional flag designs and full layouts.
Choosing your size
Flags come in multiple heights so you can match the setting:
- Small (around 8 ft): indoor use, tight sidewalks, and entrances.
- Medium (around 10 ft): the everyday choice for storefronts and events, visible without overwhelming the space.
- Large (12 to 16 ft): maximum visibility from a distance, ideal for highways, large lots, and festivals.
Single sided vs double sided
Single sided print shows a correct readable image from the front and a mirrored version from the back, which is fine for most uses and costs less. Double sided print blocks light through the middle so the flag reads correctly from both directions, worth it for high traffic spots where people approach from either side.
Pick the right base
- Ground spike: pushes into grass or soft ground. Best for outdoor events, lawns, and festivals.
- Cross base: a flat X shaped stand for hard surfaces like concrete, sidewalks, and indoor floors. Add a water or sand weight for windy days.
How to decide fast
- Indoors or low wind? Teardrop reads clearly even when still.
- Windy or outdoors? Knife flags flutter and grab attention.
- Lots of copy or a tall logo? Blade gives the most vertical space.
- Tight budget or classic design? Rectangle is the value pick.
- Hard ground? Choose a cross base. Grass? A ground spike.
