How to Design a Step and Repeat Backdrop That Photographs Well

A step and repeat backdrop is the branded wall you see behind people at events, press moments, galas, and photo booths. The name comes from the artwork: a logo that repeats in a tiled pattern so that no matter where someone stands, a clean logo lands in the shot. Done right it gives you free brand exposure every time a photo is posted. Done wrong, logos get cut in half behind heads and the wall looks cheap. Here is how to get it right.

Pick the right size first

Two sizes cover most needs:

  • 8 ft x 8 ft: fits one to three people per photo. Ideal for smaller events, booths, and tight spaces.
  • 10 ft x 8 ft: the most popular size. Comfortably frames groups of three to five and gives photographers more room to work.

If you expect group photos or a red carpet line, go with the 10 ft wide option.

Get the logo spacing right

This is the part people get wrong. A few rules that keep logos visible in every shot:

  • Repeat the logo on a tight grid. Logos should sit close enough that at least one full logo always appears between and above people's heads.
  • Stagger the rows. Offsetting each row like a brick pattern prevents a straight gap line from running behind a row of shoulders.
  • Keep logos out of the dead zone. The bottom 2 to 3 feet is usually blocked by bodies, so the action happens in the upper two thirds. Make sure that zone is full of clean logos.
  • Mix sizes only if it helps. One brand logo repeated at a consistent size reads cleaner than a busy collage. If you add sponsor logos, give the lead brand the most repetitions.

Set up the file correctly

  • Use vector artwork (AI, EPS, or PDF) so logos stay razor sharp at full size.
  • Include bleed. Extend the background past the trim edge so there are no white slivers at the border.
  • Stick to your brand colors. Provide exact color values so the print matches your other materials.
  • Avoid pure white backgrounds if you can. A subtle brand color or tone hides scuffs and looks more premium on camera.

If that sounds like a lot, you do not have to do it alone. Every PromoMogul order includes a free digital art proof, so we lay out the repeat and you approve exactly how it looks before anything prints.

Single sided, hardware, and replacement options

Our step and repeat displays use full color dye sublimation fabric on a pop up frame that assembles in minutes with no tools. You can order the complete kit, the hardware only if you already have a graphic, or just a replacement graphic when your branding changes, so the frame is a one time buy.

Ready to build yours? See sizes and options on the custom backdrops collection and we will send a free art proof with your logo laid out before production.
